Adult Education – Defining and Defying Gender Roles in Jewish Texts
This course explores the rich spectrum of gender in Jewish tradition, touching on classical, mystical, halakhic, and contemporary sources. From kabbalistic teachings on reincarnation to rabbinic responsa on gender transition, from Hasidic interpretations of biblical figures to queer midrash and inclusive liturgy, we will uncover how Jewish texts across the ages have recognized and responded to gender diversity. Drawing on voices from Rabbi Yechiel Michael of Zloczow to Dr. Joy Ladin, we will examine how the Jewish textual tradition can speak to—and grow with—the lived experiences of cisgender, transgender, nonbinary, and gender-nonconforming Jews.
