Social Action Committee

Tikkun Olam - Repair of the World – comes to life within the work of the Social Action Committee. Through "Mitzvah" projects, we plan and coordinate both short and long-term relationships with organizations that serve the unmet needs of people. Projects help serve the needs of both Jews and non-Jews. The committee can provide resources, volunteer and/or financial, in order for a project to be successfully completed.

Membership on the Social Action Committee is encouraged and is open to ALL synagogue members. Meetings are held monthly and Mitzvah projects are regularly scheduled.  Members are encouraged to bring ideas for new partnerships and projects to the committee's attention. Anyone interested in receiving information about the committee’s activities may request to be put on our email list by informing Bill Gartenberg.

Social Justice issues, identified as priorities by the Union for Reform Judaism’s (URJ) Religious Action Center (RAC) form the basis for much of the committee’s activities.

A list of major activities follows.

Meal Programs

We remember the prophet Isaiah's charge to "share your bread with the hungry."

Several synagogue projects serve and provide food for hungry people. Please help!  Food donations are always accepted at Temple as well.

St Ben's Meals Program – second Sunday of every month. Chicken bakers and servers are needed. Volunteers can do either or both of these tasks. Contact Sharon Goldberger at 414-354-5721 for details.

Agape Community Center Meals program – second Tuesday of every month. Volunteers prepare and serve food. Contact Afra Simms at 352-6954 (home) or 737-2773 (cell) for details.

St. Gall’s Meal Program – Fourth Thursday of even numbered months. Volunteers are needed to prepare the food the day before at Shalom and to serve the food at St. Gall's. The meal is served from 5:15 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Contact Diane Kane at (414) 351-3059 for additional information.

MAZON, a Jewish response to hunger, works day by day to carefully seek out, evaluate and fund what they believe are the best, most effective hunger prevention and relief programs in operation today. For further information visit MAZON online.

Other Social Action Committee Activities and Volunteer Opportunities

The following projects receive financial and/or volunteer resources from the Social Action Committee (SAC).

Grand Avenue Club, an organization for people living with mental illness, encourages its members to take steps towards self-sufficiency. The Social Action Committee assists with the Club’s annual Christmas Day party. For more information please contact Laeh McHenry.

Habush House is a residence for developmentally disabled adults. The SAC sponsors an annual summer outing for the residents that has included barbeques and Milwaukee Brewer’s games. For further information, contact Joel Fishman at 262-618-4380.

A number of times throughout the year, Social Action Committee members sing with residents at the Bader Center. Residents really enjoy the music. Volunteers are always welcome. Singing ability is a plus (but not required).

In addition to the ongoing programs described above, the SAC often sponsors other programs. Look for additional information about upcoming opportunities in the weekly Shalom email blasts and on the synagogue’s home page.
