Sisterhood
General Information
Sisterhood is the collective presence, voice, and strength of the women of Congregation Shalom. It is the organization of the women of our congregation who meet and work together for the benefit of our temple, our community, and Reform Judaism worldwide. We come together for social activities and for study, as well as for the growth of the individual, so that each may find an opportunity to fulfill her potential as a person and as a Jewish woman.
At Congregation Shalom, Sisterhood means:
- being part of our temple, our community, and of Women of Reform Judaism. (Through WRJ, we are joining together with 75,000 Reform Jewish women who make their voices heard and their actions felt);
- meeting and working with other women on programs that benefit our congregation and our community;
- friendship, study, advocacy, and social activities; and
- opportunities for personal growth and fulfillment in a Jewish atmosphere.
Message from Sisterhood President
Andy Muchin’s April 7th presentation, "The Milchig State: 200 Years of Jewish Life in Wisconsin," was excellent. We were pleased with such a good turnout and wealth of questions about Andy’s research throughout the state. I trust you were fortunate enough to join us.
And I hope you have made a reservation for our annual Sisterhood Spring Dinner Program on Monday, May 5th. After a wine reception and delicious dinner, we will enjoy "The Best of Broadway," a delightful performance of selections from popular Broadway musicals. The three professional singers, two of whom are members of the Chicago Lyric Opera Chorus, also perform at the Italian Community Center’s Summer Courtyard Broadway Series. I extend my appreciation to co-chairs Judy Joseph and Jean Jacobsohn, as well as numerous volunteers who will assist with this program. which is the deadline for sending your Uniongram orders to Harriet Berger. To honor our confirmation students in local congregations, Congregation Shalom Sisterhood assembles a lovely booklet of Uniongrams for each student being confirmed. By adding your personal greeting in these booklets, you can contribute your kind thoughts and good wishes to the confirmands. If you have any questions, please contact Harriet at 414-352-8122.
In addition, your Uniongram donation goes directly to support the WRJ’s YES Fund (Youth, Education and Special Projects). This Fund represents WRJ’s ongoing commitment to strengthen the institutions of Reform Judaism and support its future leadership. For example, the YES Fund serves the North American Federation of Temple Youth (NFTY) and KESHER, assists rabbinic students at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion through scholarships, and supports innovative projects for Sisterhood leadership development and religious education.
Another important May date to remember is Monday, May 19th
And as various simchas occur, don’t forget to shop at Traditions, our Congregation Shalom Sisterhood Gift Shop. The hours are Monday–Friday (10:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m.), Monday–Thursday (3:00–5:30 p.m.), and Sunday morning from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Many thanks to Bunny Cohen, Joan Lozoff, Judy Nelson, and the many volunteers who manage and staff the gift shop. Take a look and see what a fabulous array of gifts is available!
I look forward to seeing you in May. As always, please feel free to share your ideas with me or anyone else who is active in Sisterhood.
