Congregation Shalom...
Many Faces, One Family

[Facebook]

Welcome to Congregation Shalom

Who We Are

Congregation Shalom is a Reform congregation located in Milwaukee's North Shore. It is dedicated to:

  • The spiritual fulfillment of individuals,
  • The growth and development of families,
  • The welfare of Israel and the world community,
  • We take pride in being a caring community, an institution in which the beauty of tradition blends with the creative expression of modern Judaism.

Established in May of 1951 by 14 families, Congregation Shalom's membership grew to 435 families in just three years. Further growth required additions to the physical facilities over the next four decades, culminating in a major renovation and expansion in 1992. This expansion has allowed us to better serve the religious and educational needs of our congregants, currently more than 1000 member families.

Our history covers over 50 years, 2 senior Rabbis, much growth and change.

Sunday, February 19- Sunday Forum

Join us for a Sunday Forum with Rabbi Shapiro beginning at 10:00 a.m. in Kesselman Chapel. Jewish Literature-The Stories of I.L. Peretz. I.L. Peretz wrote powerful short stories which graphically described Jewish life in Eastern Europe during the end of the 19th century and the early decades of the 20th century. These beautifully written stories describe the life experienced by Jewish people during this period. Have you ever wondered about the lives lived by your grandparents or great-grandparents in Europe which ultimately convinced them to leave a life filled with travail and make their way to North America? These stories and the commentary about them which will be offered by Rabbi Shapiro will offer insights into the lives our family members who sacrificed much in order for us to experience the relative freedom and comforts which we enjoy today by living in the United States. We will read portions of the stories and discuss them. Refreshments will be served.

Tuesday, beginning February 21- Adult Education Classes

A six-week class, taught by Rabbi Ronald M. Shapiro and Rabbi Noah Chertkoff will explore the beautiful heritage of Jewish tradition. Jewish wisdom is a precious legacy and its treasures can transform a person’s life with beauty and meaning. This class will begin as a foundation of learning the basics of Judaism and continue into the future with an evermore deepening understanding of Jewish practice, philosophy, history, liturgy, mysticism, and the culture of the Jewish people. The first number of classes will cover basic Judaism, albeit there will be commentary and discussion on how these practices can be meaningfully applied to life’s day-to-day existence. In addition, a continual seasoning of Jewish humor, and mystical stories will be sprinkled into the conversation. The class will be held at Congregation Shalom on Tuesday evenings from 7:30–9:00 p.m. The classes will be held from February 21st through March 27th on each of those Tuesday evenings. Coffee, tea, and sweets will be served, as well. RSVP to Abby.

Grant. of Please join us at 1:00 p.m. in the choir room when Marilyn Berman will lead the discussion. We are always happy to welcome new readers to the group. As we travel back in thoughts and time, we will also hear the familiar voice of Rabbi Harry Pastor, as we listen to excerpts from services from Shalom’s past.
