Consecration: The Honey on the Page

Our tradition tells us that at the commencement of religious learning for a young child, a swab of honey was placed on the pages of a book, and a “taste of sweetness” given to the student – so that the study of Torah would ever be “sweet” in our mouths and our minds. We welcome our K4 and new students in K5-3rd religious school and day school students into the study of Torah with a ceremony of Consecration held on Erev Simchat Torah. Our K5 students ascend the bimah, recite the Shema, are blessed, and receive their very own miniature Torah scroll.
